Tetley History Since 1837

The Tetley name can be traced right back to the beginning of the 19th Century when brothers Joseph and Edward Tetley began to "peddle" salt from the back of a horse on the Yorkshire Moors. In time they added tea to their supplies, using the proceeds to establish themselves as tea merchants.

Over the next 20 years the company extended its services to include blending and packing tea.

Tetley launched the tea bag into the UK in 1953, nearly 33 years after its introduction to the American market. Many people thought the idea would "never catch on".

Since then Tetley have pioneered the development of tea bag technology and continued to build on their vast experience in the art of tea blending. Landmark developments have been

  • Introduction of the round tea bags in 1989
  • Drawstring tea bags in 1994
  • Soft pack (re-sealable packaging) in 1988
